# The Best Fintech Gamification Tool Is Usually Two Tools: In-App Gamification Platforms for Indian Fintech Apps (2026)

**TL;DR**

- Gamification in a fintech app needs two layers, and most tools only do one of them well.
- An experience layer renders the scratch card or spin wheel natively inside the app.
- A reward engine validates eligibility on the server, enforces budget caps, pays out cash to UPI or a voucher, and keeps the ledger.
- Flyy is the strongest Indian option for the reward engine, with RazorpayX-powered UPI payouts and budget-limit controls.
- Plotline, CleverTap, MoEngage, and Digia Engage are experience-layer tools, and none of them publicly documents UPI cash payouts.
- The stakes are real: when one bank's app [switched off its reward module, on-time loan repayments fell 31%](https://www.ucdavis.edu/curiosity/gap/game-over-how-customers-respond-when-mobile-banking-app-rewards-go-dark).
- Before you buy, check SEBI's [June 2026 draft advertisement code](https://www.sebi.gov.in/reports-and-statistics/reports/jun-2026/consultation-paper-on-common-advertisement-code-for-specified-sebi-regulated-entities_102304.html), which would stop brokers and mutual funds from offering vouchers or incentives.

_Editorial disclosure: Digia Engage is one of the tools reviewed in this article. In October 2026 we reviewed each vendor's public product pages, documentation, pricing pages, and case studies. Where a vendor does not publicly state a capability, we say "not stated" rather than assume it. Vendors may offer more on request._

## Quick answer: which tool fits which fintech team

| UPI cash rewards and referral payouts with budget limits | Flyy | Pays to UPI or bank through RazorpayX and exposes budget and reward-limit events |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gamified formats inside an app you already run on CleverTap or MoEngage | Your CEP's templates, or an experience layer on top of it | Templates exist, but they are HTML-based and limited |
| Native gamified UI that ships without app releases, with rewards handled by your own backend | Digia Engage or Plotline | Both render natively and are configured from a dashboard |
| A loyalty points programme tied to your CEP | CleverTap Promos | Points, cashback, coupons, and per-user caps as a CEP add-on |
| Full control over reward logic and regulatory audit | Custom build, usually with a payout API | You own validation, the ledger, payouts, and logs |

The right shortlist for most Indian fintech teams pairs one experience-layer tool with one reward engine, or with a reward service your backend team already runs.

## Why is gamification different in fintech apps?

Gamification in a food or shopping app rewards attention. In a fintech app, the reward is often money, and the behaviour it shapes involves money. That changes four things.

### Rewards change financial behaviour, in both directions

The best evidence comes from a study of a Latin American bank's app published in Marketing Science. When the bank stopped its reward module of prize wheels, raffles, scratch cards, and in-app currency, [logins fell 20% and free bill payments fell 18%. On-time loan repayments fell 31%](https://www.ucdavis.edu/curiosity/gap/game-over-how-customers-respond-when-mobile-banking-app-rewards-go-dark) ([journal abstract](https://ideas.repec.org/a/inm/ormksc/v44y2025i3p546-565.html)). Savings research points the same way. Users of a gamified savings app in a Bayes Business School study [saved almost 20% more relative to their goal](https://www.bayes.citystgeorges.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2022/january/turning-long-term-savings-goals-into-a-game-can-increase-consumer-financial-well-being), and research on prize-linked savings in Management Science found users [raised total savings by about 1% of annual income](https://pubsonline.informs.org/doi/fpi/10.1287/mnsc.2021.4047).

![After a bank removed its rewards, app logins fell 20%, free bill payments 18% and on-time loan repayments 31%](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/53loe8pn/production/99b151bc2fd8c3ad086e2eb04ca229858b8a98b5-2800x1320.png?w=1200&fit=max&auto=format)

The same mechanics can push users the wrong way. The UK FCA found that points and prize draws in trading apps [raised trading by 12% and the share of risky trades by 6%](https://www.fca.org.uk/news/press-releases/fca-keeps-trading-apps-under-review-over-gaming-concerns). A Kenyan lottery-linked deposit experiment [increased deposits by 42% but also raised reported gambling by 15%](https://cenfri.org/research-paper/using-lotteries-to-encourage-saving-experimental-evidence-from-kenya/). Choosing which behaviour to reward matters more than choosing which tool renders it.

### Rewards attract fraud

A cashback offer is a cash incentive for anyone who can create accounts. Assam police once seized [over 5,500 SIM cards used to harvest new-user cashback](https://sentinelassam.com/topheadlines/cyber-criminals-diverting-online-customers-bonus) and route it to wallets. Fraud controls belong in the selection criteria from day one.

### Rewards are regulated and sometimes taxed

Card reward programmes, broking incentives, online games involving stakes, and prizes all fall under different Indian rules. The India rules section below covers what applies in 2026.

### Rewards cost real money

Indian payments apps learned this expensively. Paytm [gave away a reported ₹588 crore in cashback in 2015](https://officechai.com/news/paytm-gave-away-a-stunning-588-crore-in-cashbacks-last-year/). Budget controls are a finance requirement as much as a product one.

## The two layers: experience layer and reward engine

Every fintech gamification programme has two distinct jobs, and vendor marketing tends to blur them.

**The experience layer** decides when and where the game appears and how it looks: the scratch card after a first UPI payment, the streak tracker on the SIP screen, the spin wheel after a bill payment, the quiz in an insurance learning tab. Its job is rendering quality and speed of iteration.

**The reward engine** decides whether the user actually earned something and delivers it: server-side eligibility checks, probability and inventory, budget and per-user caps, fraud screening, payout to UPI or a voucher, and a ledger that finance and auditors can reconcile.

A scratch card that looks great but trusts the client to decide the prize is a fraud vector.

![Fintech gamification needs two layers: an in-app experience layer and a server-side reward engine that decides, caps and pays rewards](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/53loe8pn/production/346fc7badfe6ebd2d45dee089bfb6b7a334061b9-2800x1280.png?w=1200&fit=max&auto=format)

A rewards backend with a WebView popup that loads slowly on a mid-range Android phone is a conversion problem. Most teams need both layers done well, and in 2026 very few vendors cover both publicly.

## How we evaluated the tools

In October 2026 we scored each tool against five criteria that matter specifically for fintech, plus two that matter for any mobile team.

### The five fintech criteria

1. **Event-driven rewards.** Can a reward fire on a real business event, such as a first UPI payment, a SIP debit, an on-time EMI, or a policy renewal, rather than only on a screen view?
2. **Server-side validation.** Is eligibility decided on a server, so a tampered client cannot claim a reward?
3. **Fraud controls and reward caps.** Are there per-user limits, daily limits, and campaign budget caps, and any abuse detection?
4. **Cash and voucher payouts.** Does the tool pay the reward itself, or does your team build fulfilment?
5. **Compliance and audit.** Are there activity logs, approval workflows, certifications, and data residency options a bank or NBFC risk team will accept?

### Two mobile criteria

1. **Native rendering.** Does the game render as native UI or inside a WebView or HTML template?
2. **Release independence.** Can the growth team launch and change campaigns without an app release?

We also noted public pricing, because a tool that hides gamification behind an enterprise plan changes the business case.

## Comparison table

"Not stated" means the vendor's public pages and docs did not say, as of October 2026.

![Grid of what Flyy, Plotline, CleverTap, MoEngage, Digia Engage and a custom build publicly document across five fintech gamification criteria](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/53loe8pn/production/5848b174c101e1a4638c36125bc9479449c6a07f-2800x1120.png?w=1200&fit=max&auto=format)

## The 8 tools reviewed

### 1. Flyy: the strongest reward engine for Indian fintech

Flyy is built around rewards rather than around UI. [Its feature list](https://www.theflyy.com/features) covers scratch cards, spin wheels, leaderboards, streaks, raffles, quizzes, and referral programmes, with what it calls 25+ games.

**Where Flyy wins.** It is the only vendor in this review that publicly documents cash payouts: cash rewards can be [delivered to a user's UPI or bank account](https://www.theflyy.com/rewards), with a [built-in wallet using the RazorpayX payout gateway](https://www.theflyy.com/features), alongside gift cards and brand vouchers. Its event model is server-side by design. [Your backend sends an event to Flyy through an API](https://docs.theflyy.com/docs/introduction-2), and Flyy checks eligibility. Its [webhook documentation](https://docs.theflyy.com/docs/webhook-document) includes events for campaign budget reached and daily and total reward limits, which tells you budget controls exist. Its [client list](https://www.theflyy.com/case-studies) is heavily fintech, including Kotak Mahindra Bank, Kotak Securities, CASHe, and IndiaLends. Published results include a lending case where a scratch card worth [up to ₹25 for early repayment accompanied on-time repayment of up to 94%](https://www.theflyy.com/stucred), though no baseline is given.

**Where it falls short.** Flyy does not publish pricing, certifications, data residency, or its rendering approach, and it does not describe fraud screening beyond limits. Ask for a security pack and a fraud-control walkthrough in the demo.

**Best for:** lending and payments apps that want cash or voucher rewards with budget control and do not want to build payout infrastructure.

### 2. Plotline: wide format library, enterprise-priced gamification

[Plotline's gamification product](https://www.plotline.so/products/gamification) offers scratch cards, spin wheels, quizzes, streaks, slot machines, treasure chests, and mystery boxes, triggered by events, pages, or user actions. Rendering is native across iOS, Android, React Native, Flutter, and web, per its [FAQ](https://www.plotline.so/frequently-asked-questions). It holds a [4.6 rating on G2](https://www.g2.com/products/plotline/reviews).

**Where Plotline wins.** Format breadth and a large Indian customer base, including fintech names such as BharatPe, CoinDCX, LazyPay, and Khatabook on its [success stories page](https://www.plotline.so/success-stories). Campaign controls include probability weights, per-user limits, and time caps.

**Where it falls short.** Gamification sits on the Enterprise tier with custom pricing, according to its [pricing page](https://www.plotline.so/pricing), so the published Starter and Growth prices do not include it. The published fintech results relate to cross-sell and adoption campaigns, not gamification. Payouts are limited to coupon codes and winner export, and server-side validation and fraud controls are not stated.

**Best for:** well-funded teams that want a broad library of game formats and will handle reward fulfilment in their own backend.

### 3. CleverTap: gamification inside a full CEP

CleverTap offers [Spin the Wheel and Scratch the Card templates](https://docs.clevertap.com/docs/in-app-editor) in its in-app editor. They are Custom HTML templates in private beta, enabled through an account manager. Its [Promos product](https://clevertap.com/promos-loyalty-points-rewards-platform/), built on the [rehook.ai acquisition announced in June 2025](https://www.acnnewswire.com/press-release/english/100272/), adds loyalty points, cashback, coupons, per-user and per-coupon redemption limits, and campaign budgets.

**Where CleverTap wins.** If you already run CleverTap, segments and events are already in place, and Promos gives you a points ledger. CleverTap holds [ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II](https://clevertap.com/security/) and offers an India data region.

**Where it falls short.** The game templates are HTML and still in beta. For custom rewards, [CleverTap sends a webhook and your wallet service credits the reward](https://docs.clevertap.com/docs/custom-rewards), so UPI fulfilment remains your build. Promos is an add-on on top of the [published pricing](https://clevertap.com/pricing/).

**Best for:** existing CleverTap customers who want a points programme without adding a vendor. See also [CleverTap alternatives for better in-app UI](https://www.digia.tech/post/clevertap-alternatives-7-tools-better-in-app-ui).

### 4. MoEngage: quick no-code templates for existing customers

MoEngage offers [no-code gamification templates](https://moengage.com/docs/user-guide/campaigns-and-channels/in-app-message/templates/no-code-gamification-templates) for Spin the Wheel (up to 10 sectors) and Scratch Card, which work with the existing MoEngage SDK.

**Where MoEngage wins.** Zero new integration for existing customers and a strong compliance profile, including [SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, and an India data centre](https://www.moengage.com/capabilities/scale-and-security/).

**Where it falls short.** The [gamification templates are HTML-based](https://moengage.com/docs/user-guide/campaigns-and-channels/in-app-message/templates/gamification-templates). Repeat prevention for scratch cards is not built in, so teams must set a user attribute and exclude that segment, and MoEngage does not track redemptions. Payouts and fraud controls are not stated.

**Best for:** MoEngage customers testing whether a game format moves a metric before investing further.

### 5. Digia Engage: native experience layer on your existing CEP

Digia Engage renders [scratch cards, spin wheels, quizzes, streaks, and milestone rewards](https://www.digia.tech/products/gamification/) as native components and takes triggers and audiences from the CEP you already run, such as CleverTap or MoEngage, per its [core concepts documentation](https://docs.digia.tech/digia-engage/start-here/core-concepts.md). Pricing starts at [$499 per month on annual contracts, with gamification included in every plan](https://www.digia.tech/pricing).

**Where Digia Engage wins.** Native rendering without an app release, with gamification on every plan rather than gated to enterprise. Campaign controls include probability weights, per-user limits, and time windows. Because it sits on your CEP, existing segments and events drive the game without rebuilding them.

**Where it falls short.** Digia Engage does not publicly document reward payouts, server-side reward validation, fraud screening, or campaign budget caps. The [scratch card component](https://docs.digia.tech/ui-building-blocks/widgets/input-interaction-widgets/scratch-card.md) fires an event when the card is scratched, and your backend decides and delivers the reward. Fintech teams should pair it with a reward service, either in-house or from a vendor like Flyy or Hubble.

**Best for:** teams that already have a reward backend or CEP and want native, release-free game UI. Digia's [Dezerv case study](https://www.digia.tech/case-study/dezerv/) shows the release-free model in a wealth app, though that campaign was a SIP top-up nudge rather than gamification.

### 6. Hubble and Xoxoday Plum: reward infrastructure, not game UI

[Hubble describes itself](https://www.myhubble.money/blogs/what-is-hubble) as rewards and loyalty infrastructure for Indian fintech, with event-triggered rewards, redemption, fraud reduction, and APIs and SDKs for integration. [Xoxoday Plum](https://www.xoxoday.com/plum) offers a rewards API and a large voucher catalogue, with SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.

**Best for:** teams pairing an experience-layer tool with a third-party reward catalogue instead of building fulfilment.

### 7. Bricqs: web contests, weak fit for native fintech apps

Bricqs is listed on [Capterra as a campaign engagement platform](https://www.capterra.in/software/1091343/Bricqs) with quizzes, contests, leaderboards, and loyalty, priced from $99. We found no native mobile SDK and no named Indian fintech customers in public sources, and UPI payouts are not mentioned. It may suit web campaigns, but it is a weak fit for in-app gamification in a native fintech app.

### 8. Custom build: maximum control, maximum ownership

Large Indian payments apps built their reward systems in-house. Google Pay's [India rewards terms](https://support.google.com/pay/india/answer/7580493?hl=en-IN) show the controls a mature in-house system carries, including per-user variation and disqualification for misuse.

**Build when** reward logic is a core differentiator or your risk team requires full ownership of the ledger and audit trail. **Buy when** you need to launch within a quarter or your engineering team is already committed to core product work. A common middle path is building the reward ledger and validation in-house while using a vendor for game UI.

## India rules that apply to fintech rewards in 2026

As of October 2026, five sets of rules shape what a fintech gamification programme can do. This is a growth team's reading. Check specific campaigns with your compliance team.

| Online Gaming Act 2025, rules in force from 1 May 2026 | Online money games, where users pay money or play for stakes, are banned. Free promotional games with no stake are generally read as outside the ban. Never ask users to pay or stake to play. |
| --- | --- |
| SEBI draft Common Advertisement Code, June 2026 | Proposes that brokers, mutual funds, advisers, and other regulated entities refrain from any incentive, voucher, or coupon to induce trading, investing, account reactivation, or app downloads. Business Today reported it would cover cashback and gift cards. Still a draft as of October 2026. |
| NSE referral rules | Referred clients must not face trade inducements, and referrers must be registered. Zerodha stopped brokerage-sharing for referrals and moved to reward points. |
| RBI card Master Direction 2022 | Card reward points must be offered transparently, with the source of the benefit disclosed and accounting verifiable in the issuer's books. |
| CCPA Dark Patterns Guidelines 2023 | Fake countdowns on rewards are false urgency, and hidden reward conditions can be drip pricing or bait and switch. |

### Tax on rewards

Prizes from games and contests can attract TDS. ClearTax summarizes that [Section 194B applies above ₹10,000 on lottery and game-show prizes and Section 194BA taxes net online game winnings at 30%](https://cleartax.in/s/taxes-on-lottery-puzzles-game-shows). Section 194R covers benefits given in the course of business, and [Taxmann's analysis](https://taxmann.com/post/blog/guide-to-applicability-of-section-194r-to-discounts-rebates-gifts-incentives-cashbacks) reads consumer cashback on personal spend as outside it. Large-prize mechanics such as bumper draws need a tax review before launch.

For the wider regulatory picture, including RBI's marketing and sales directions that take effect in January 2027, see [Fintech App Engagement: The Complete Guide (2026)](https://www.digia.tech/post/fintech-app-engagement-core-actions-trust-signals).

## How to stop reward fraud

Promo abuse is common. A PYMNTS consumer survey reported by The Fraud Practice found that [31.1% of respondents had self-referred using a new identity and 22% had created multiple accounts for new-customer offers](https://fraudpractice.com/post/just-40-of-consumers-have-not-attempted-some-form-of-promo-abuse-in-the-past-year).

![Five-step fraud-resistant reward flow, from settled payment through server-side eligibility checks to payout and ledger](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/53loe8pn/production/fc78312466941b5d1ce4577a5e16812542b8b3d4-2400x1120.png?w=1200&fit=max&auto=format)

Build these controls before launch, whichever tool you choose:

- **Decide rewards on the server.** The client only displays the outcome the server decided.
- **Tie rewards to completed financial events,** such as a settled payment or a debited SIP, rather than to sign-ups or app opens.
- **Cap rewards at every level,** per user, per day, per campaign, and per payout channel, with alerts as budgets approach limits.
- **Delay cash payouts** for new accounts until a second genuine transaction, and screen device and SIM signals for clusters.
- **Keep a reconcilable ledger** of every reward issued, claimed, paid, and reversed, so finance and auditors can match it to payouts.
- **Write clear terms,** including the right to disqualify misuse, as [Google Pay's terms](https://support.google.com/pay/india/answer/7580493?hl=en-IN) do.

## Which mechanics fit which fintech category?

| Payments and UPI | First and repeat payments, bill pay | Scratch card after a completed payment | Cashback farming with new accounts |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Lending | On-time and early repayment | Repayment streak with a small reward | Rewarding new borrowing rather than repayment |
| Neobanks and savings | Recurring deposits, savings goals | Savings streaks and milestones | Lottery-style mechanics that encourage gambling |
| Wealth and broking | Long-term SIP continuation, learning | Milestones and badges without monetary rewards | SEBI's draft ban on incentives, and trading-frequency rewards |
| Insurance | Education, renewals, claims readiness | Quizzes and learning streaks | Rewards that look like inducements to buy a policy |

The pattern across categories: reward the habit that leaves the user financially better off. A busy dashboard is a weak reason to pay a reward. For format-level design and timing data, see [Scratch Cards in Mobile Apps: Design, Timing, and Conversion Data](https://www.digia.tech/post/scratch-cards-design-timing-conversion-data/) and [Gamification in Mobile Apps: Streaks, Rewards and Retention](https://www.digia.tech/post/gamification-mobile-apps-streaks-rewards-retention/). For the psychology behind variable rewards, see [Paytm's Scratch Card Runs on the Same Psychology as a Slot Machine](https://www.digia.tech/post/paytm-scratch-card-reward-psychology).

## Buyer checklist

Ask every vendor these eight questions in the demo, and ask for written answers:

1. Which of the two layers do you cover?
2. Is reward eligibility decided on a server, or can the client influence it?
3. Which caps can we set per user and per campaign, and what happens when one is hit?
4. Who pays the reward to UPI or a voucher, and how does the ledger reconcile with our finance system?
5. Is the game rendered natively or in a WebView, and how fast does it load on a mid-range Android device?
6. Can the growth team launch and change a campaign without an app release?
7. Which certifications do you hold, where is data stored, who can approve campaigns, and do you keep audit logs?
8. Is gamification included in the plan we are pricing, or is it an enterprise add-on?

## Key Takeaways

- Fintech gamification needs an experience layer and a reward engine. Most tools cover one layer well, so the best shortlist usually pairs two tools or one tool with your own reward backend.
- Flyy is the only vendor here that publicly documents UPI and bank cash payouts with budget limits. Plotline, CleverTap, MoEngage, and Digia Engage leave fulfilment to your backend or CEP.
- Rewards measurably change financial behaviour, including a 31% drop in on-time repayments when one bank removed them, so choose the behaviour you reward before choosing the tool.
- Check the rules for your category first. SEBI's draft ad code could bar incentives in broking and mutual fund apps, and the Online Gaming Act bans any game where users pay or stake money.
