What is a variable reward?

Used in a sentence: Instead of a flat cashback on every bill payment, let's try a scratch card so the reward feels like a small surprise.

How it works

A variable reward links a user action to a reward drawn from a pool of possible outcomes. The user completes a qualifying action, such as a payment, an order or a referral, and earns a chance to reveal the reward through a scratch card, spin wheel or mystery box.

Behind the interface, the outcome is decided by rules: a set of prizes, the odds for each, budget limits and eligibility. Many pools include small or zero-value outcomes alongside rarer larger ones. The reveal animation is part of the mechanic, since the short wait before the result is where anticipation builds.

Example

A bill payments app wants more users to pay their electricity bill in the app each month. After a successful payment, a scratch card appears on the confirmation screen. Most cards reveal a small cashback or a partner coupon, and a few reveal a larger reward. The team caps the total monthly budget and limits each user to one card per bill.

Variable vs fixed reward

Main effectAnticipation and repeat attemptsClear, predictable incentive
Budget controlSet through odds and capsSet through a flat rate

Fixed rewards are easier to explain. Variable rewards are better at making a routine action feel interesting.

Best practices

  • Tie the reward to a meaningful action, not just an app open.
  • Make sure every outcome has some value, even if small, so users do not feel cheated.
  • Set clear budget caps and per-user limits before launch.
  • Show the terms and eligibility plainly next to the reward.

How to do this with Digia Engage

A growth team picks a scratch card or spin wheel template on the gamification product, sets the reward pool, odds and caps, and styles it to match the app. The trigger can be any event already tracked, such as a completed payment, and the experience appears in under 100ms. Changes to rewards or targeting go live without an app release. See the Gamification product page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do variable rewards work?
Uncertainty makes the reveal itself rewarding. Behavioural research on reinforcement schedules suggests that unpredictable rewards keep people engaged longer than predictable ones, because each attempt might bring something better. In apps, this shows up as users completing an action to see what the next scratch card or spin holds.
Are variable rewards allowed in fintech apps in India?
It depends on the product. Rewards tied to investment, trading or lending products can fall under SEBI or RBI rules on inducements and fair practice, and the rules change over time. Teams should check reward design, eligibility and disclosures with their compliance team before launching any variable reward campaign.
