What is a streak mechanic?

Used in a sentence: Let's count a streak only when someone finishes a lesson, not when they just open the app, or the number stops meaning anything.

How it works

The app defines a qualifying action and a period, usually a calendar day in the user’s time zone. Each time the user completes the action within the period, the counter goes up. If a period passes without it, the streak resets, unless a freeze or grace rule applies.

The streak is shown where it matters: on the home screen, after the action is completed, and in reminders near the end of the day for users who have not yet acted. Rewards are often attached at milestones, such as the end of the first week, to give users near-term goals beyond simply not breaking the chain.

Example

A news app wants readers to build a daily reading habit. Reading one full article counts toward the streak. A small flame counter sits on the home screen, and an in-app banner in the evening reminds users who have not read yet. At the one-week and one-month marks, users earn a badge and a premium article. A single grace day per week keeps a missed day from ending the streak.

Streak vs milestone reward

Many apps combine them, with milestones placed along the streak.

Best practices

  • Count one meaningful action, not just an app open.
  • Add a freeze or grace day so a single miss does not wipe out weeks of progress.
  • Send reminders only to users who have not acted yet that day.
  • Track whether streak users retain better, not just how long streaks get.

How to do this with Digia Engage

A growth team configures a streak counter in the no-code builder, chooses the qualifying event from those already tracked, and adds milestone rewards and reminder nudges. All of it ships without an app release. Lokal used streak mechanics and reward nudges to drive daily engagement, as described in the Lokal case study. Formats and setup are on the mobile app streaks page.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stop streaks from feeling like pressure?
Give users some slack. Offer a streak freeze or a grace day, let them repair a broken streak with a small action, and keep reminder copy encouraging rather than alarming. Celebrate milestones along the way so the value does not rest only on the current count, and cap streak reminders per day.
What actions should count toward a streak?
Count the action that delivers the product's core value, such as finishing a lesson, reading an article, logging a workout or making a payment. Avoid counting app opens alone. The action should be quick enough to do every day, but meaningful enough that doing it daily actually helps the user.
